What are the foods in season?

In addition to being delicious on our plates, seasonal foods are also excellent for the environment. Knowing which fruits and vegetables are currently in the season could help you save money because food is more accessible and less expensive when they are in season. September marks the end of summer berries, but plenty of other fruits are still available, including apples, plums, grapes, figs, and pears.

Currently, the vegetables in season are:

  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Cucumber
  • Peppers
  • Peas
  • Apples
  • Peaches
  • Peas

Tomatoes are scarcely back in season; prices are dropping but not as much. We will see a total drop by October.

Here are some images from the retreat.

Prices of onions are now on the rise across Nigeria

Due to a severe shortage, prices for onions, one of the most widely consumed vegetables in Nigeria, have increased significantly, forcing households to spend more money.

As shortage spreads across the nation’s markets, prices have been steadily increasing over the past month. Some sources claim that this is due to the lack of storage options for farmers and the high cost of transportation. Some sources have suggested that we might be headed for astronomically high costs similar to those we experienced two years ago.

Lagos opens the largest logistics and food security hub in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Lagos State Government has started building what would be a giant Food Security Systems and Central Logistics Park in sub-Saharan Africa to lessen vulnerability to food shortages and ensure continuous food supplies.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu conducted the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday at the facility constructed on 1.2 million square meters of land in Ketu-Ereyun, Epe.

The creation of the food park is a part of the bold 5-year Agricultural and Food Systems Road Map (2021–2025) that the Sanwo-Olu administration unveiled in 2021 to increase Lagos’ food sufficiency, enrich the lives of over 5 million traders and ensure the food security of over 10 million Lagos residents.

When complete, the primary food and logistics hub is anticipated to directly benefit more than 5 million traders in the agricultural value chain and ensure that more than 10 million Lagos residents will have access to food for at least 90 days at a time of scarcity.

In Lagos, there is reportedly N5 trillion worth of food-related transactions per year, but daily, farmers lose 40% of produce worth millions due to a lack of post-harvest storage systems.

The facility would eliminate many layers of middlemen and enable better access to contemporary processing and packaging services. According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, the central food hub would ensure increased returns for farmers and investors in the agro-allied industry.

He emphasized that the market matrix produced by the facility would assist the Government in producing valuable data for public planning and for use by stakeholders in the private sector to project investment.

Stakeholders urge the Government to allocate 10% of the budget to agriculture.

Following a two-day consultative forum on the 2023 agriculture budget Tuesday in Lagos, stakeholders from organizations, government ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as institutes and bodies of farmers, urged the Federal Government and other sub-national governments to prioritize agriculture by allocating 10% of their annual budgets to the sector to meet the Maputo/Malabo Declaration’s 10% benchmark.

In the second quarter of 2022, agriculture will continue to contribute the most to Nigeria’s GDP, at 23.3%, surpassing the contributions of trade (16.8%), telecommunication (15%), manufacturing (8.7%), and oil and gas sector(6.3%). This is according to the chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Bima Muhammad Enagi, who also serves as the chairman of the forum.

For Nigeria to be on track in the upcoming Biennial Report to the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, following the Malabo Declaration and Commitments of 2014, he urged the Government to allocate at least 10% of budgets and actual revenues to the agriculture sector with appropriate budget lines.
